Course in Composition, 2 years

A general program in composition basically intended for students, preparing to apply for university studies in music composition or professional musicians wanting to develop their composing skills. The foundation of the program's curriculum is derived from the tradition of Western art music: notation, ear training, harmony, instrumentation, composition techniques, aesthetics/analysis etc. More contemporary subjects are also included, like electroacoustic music, film music, live electronics (only available the second year of study) and computer programming.

The school has two principal composition professors. Composition is taught in individual lessons with one assigned professor, but also in seminars about contemporary music. Each student has 11 hours of individual lessons per year, but also the possibility to schedule meetings with the other professor.

The goal of the program is to provide each student with sufficient craftsmanship skills and artistic challenges to be able to develop his or her individual musical language. Each student is expected to produce at least one composition, performed at the festival Ljudvågor.
